New Store in Claremont Has Brought Green Energy Systems to Homeowners

CLAREMONT, NH – The new Clear Mountain Solar Store in Claremont held its Grand Opening on Saturday, May 5th to debut its renewable energy and sustainable living products. The Clear Mountain Solar Store sells solar panels to create electricity; solar hot water systems for radiant heating and household hot water; Energy Star and other high-efficiency household appliances; wood, pellet and bio-fuel stoves; green living books and magazines; and other items to help homeowners in the Upper Valley and Lakes regions learn about and achieve energy independence.
Clear Mountain Solar Store is affiliated with the USA Solar Store “family” of stores based in Vermont. Co-owners Mitch Sidd and Scott Hitchcock say their residential-sized wind turbines, micro-hydro electric, and photovoltaic (solar) energy systems are intended give homeowners freedom from high energy bills, as well as greater energy security in winter when storms knock out power for hours or even days on end. “Home energy creation is one of the greatest contributors to CO2 pollution, and alternative energy is a significant step every family can take in reducing global climate change,” says USA Solar Stores president Dave Bonta.

Sidd was the Solar Store project manager for 2 years who previously taught industrial arts and holds a Master of Fine Arts in sculpture. Hitchcock was a USA Solar Store solar hot water installer with 13 years in retail hardware, building and plumbing. The two soon discovered that they worked well as a team and realized they would make great business partners. They quickly found an ideal location in Claremont and within a few months were ready to open their doors on Washington Street.
A recent nationwide poll suggests that most Americans want to see government action on climate change, but most don’t know how they, personally, can be part of solution. “Clear Mountain Solar Store will help with that, says co-owner Scott Hitchcock, by showing people what renewable energy systems look like, how they work, and how easy they are to use.
Clear Mountain partners with installers—plumbers, electricians and experienced builders to train in them installing solar, wind and micro-hydro power systems. “Recently, building contractors have shown great interest in green building in New England reflecting the phenomenal growth in ‘green’ building and remodeling in recent years,” says Sidd. In addition, their central location near the border of the two states will allow them to oversee teams of installers in New Hampshire and Vermont.
Sidd and Hitchcock can build low-cost camp-sized solar energy systems right in the store, and will also do high-end systems for large homes and businesses, but their focus will be on the mainstream homeowner in the Lakes Region and Upper Valley with little or no experience in renewable energy. They want the customer’s experience at their store to be educational, but laid back. They plan to focus on installation, sales, and training, as well as supporting the other stores in the USA Solar Store network
“Some people equate green energy living with a primitive lifestyle. That’s no longer true,” says Solar Store president and founder Dave Bonta, noting that most families unknowingly waste enormous amounts of money needlessly. “With simple conservation, efficiency and an increased awareness of your actual energy needs, you can have all the conveniences of modern life—and feel good about it,” he says. In addition to the 23 existing stores, Bonta says future Solar Stores will open in California, Florida and Hawaii in the coming months.
