Grand Opening March 17, 2007
GROTON, VT – A new Solar Store dedicated to renewable energy and sustainable living opend in Groton on St. Patrick’s Day, Saturday, March 17. The Green Works Solar Store will offer customers in northeastern Vermont and northern New Hampshire the products, design and installation services they need to become energy independent.
“There are many reasons to invest in renewable energy,” said the store’s owner, Brad Vietje, of Newbury. “It’s good for people personally – you can save money on your energy bills, and the state of Vermont and the federal government are both offering financial rebates to make the systems more affordable. It’s also a way of being patriotic,” he added. “If we can reduce our need for foreign oil, we can make our energy supply more secure. “Finally,” he said, “you really can do something to help reduce the impact of global climate change by creating your own energy from the sun, wind, and water.”
Green Works Solar Store will sell solar panels to create electricity, solar hot water systems, high-efficiency household appliances, pellet stoves, lots of books and magazines, and many other items to help people learn about and use renewable energy. Vietje plans to offer energy and related workshops soon. The products and services can be used in private homes, businesses, and camps.
The store will offer its products at affordable prices, Vietje said, because it is part of the USA Solar Store network, a group that is based on built on a cooperative model rather than a competitive one. Each store is small and has low overhead and operating costs, so each can offer the highest quality products at the lowest prices.
“When you consider solar and other renewable energy sources, the most important step is to look at your needs and find ways to use less energy through efficiency and conservation,” said Vietje. “Once we’ve minimized the energy you use, we can look at setting you up with an affordable system.”
The larger issues of global climate change and potentially unstable oil prices also motivate Vietje. “I’ve had the dream of opening this kind of store for a couple of years, since I became aware of how serious the situation is,” he said. “I hope we can help alleviate suffering, especially as people bump up against high fuel prices and possible electricity shortages in the future.”
Green Works Solar Store is located on Route 302 in the center of Groton, Vermont, seven miles west of the Wells River/Woodsville I-91 exit.
